The US government has enacted new Federal Tax credits-- for each new all-electric car purchased, there is now a federal tax credit in varying amounts which can be taken on a single tax return, or spread over multiple years from a new law signed in Feb 2009. For buyers who live in Austin, there is also a City of Austin rebate of $500. We have asked the City of Houston to start a similar program.
